There is a magnificent selection of museums in Chicago, with complexes including probably some of the best historic collections in the area. Exhibitions in Chicago range from large to small, local to international and many are located in beautiful Chicago buildings, right in the heart of Chicago.
The are a large concentration of museums in Fifth Avenue and this is often referred to as the Chicago Museum Mile. Here are Chicago's main museums.

The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is actually one of the world's largest science museums and is full of interesting and exciting exhibits, many of which are interactive. Highlights at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry include a large Omnimax Theater, a coal mine, virtual reality exhibits, a space center and a submarine. A car parking area is available at the museum.
Museum open: Monday to Friday - 09:30 to 16:00, Saturday and Sunday - 09:30 to 17:30

The Chicago Aurora Historical Museum was once home to leading Chicago businessman William Tanner and the museum recreates his Chicago home in the late 19th century. With traditional furnishings, clothes, toys, decorations, photographs and paintings, the Chicago Aurora Historical Museum also stores many of Chicago's important archives and documents.

The Clarke House Museum in Chicago is the city's oldest house and was built in 1836. This Greek Revival-style house, featuring tall columns and detailed architecture, is open to the public and depicts what typical Chicago life was like for a middle-class family in Chicago, before the Civil War. Guided tours are available.
Museum open: tours are available from Wednesday to Sunday at 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00

The Chicago Academy of Sciences is located next to the Lincoln Park zoo and is one of the most popular museums in Chicago, full of interesting exhibits relating to the world of science. Highlights at the Chicago Academy of Sciences include an Ice Age cave, a walk-through prehistoric coal forest, many changing exhibits relating to the environment and an interactive children's gallery.

Full of interesting collections, artifacts, books, civil right memorabilia, drawings, paintings and important works of art by African Americans, the Chicago DuSable Museum is actually the oldest independent institution of its kind in America. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of African Americans.
