Chicago can really boast about its wide variety of parks, ranging from the largest to the smallest parks. You would never imagine that the city of Chicago would have so much green and open space throughout.
Many areas have at least one park, whether it is just a small pool with surrounding trees or a huge park covering many acres. Here are some of the most popular parks and gardens in Chicago, providing a calming and tranquil oasis, right in the heart of hectic Chicago city life.

The splendid Chicago Botanic Gardens are one of the major tourist attractions in Chicago, attracting around one million visitors every year. Covering almost 400 acres, the beautiful gardens include 81 acres of waterways, 9 islands, 15 acres of prairie gardens and literally hundreds of acres of woodland. The gardens are located in the suburbs of Chicago and there are 23 separate gardens and three native habitat areas at the Chicago Botanic Gardens, including traditional Japanese gardens, formal rose gardens, hills, flower borders and many exceptional plant specimens. Chicago Botanic Gardens provide the ideal place for a picnic in Chicago and this is one of the most peaceful spots in Chicago. The gardens also include a restaurant, café and car parking.

Originally a small public cemetery to the north of Chicago, these parklands were converted to one of America's finest public parks in the 1860s. Over the years the park has grown from 60 acres to over 1,200 acres and is simply vast. Highlights of Chicago's Lincoln Park include excellent recreations facilities, such as 15 baseball areas, 6 basketball courts, 2 softball courts, 35 tennis courts, 163 volley ball courts, field houses and also a popular fitness center. There are also splendid landscaped gardens, a theater on the lake, with regular outdoor performances in the summer, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, a butterfly house and also Lincoln Zoo, one of the largest zoos in America.

The Chicago Lincoln Park Conservatory is situated in the beautiful Lincoln Park and was built in the late 19th century. Featuring many impressive exotic and tropical plants, flowers and trees, highlights of the Chicago Lincoln Park Conservatory include an impressive palm house, a fragrant orchid house, a fernery and also a show house, with has many seasonal exhibitions.

Grant Park is one of several vast parks in Chicago and is a popular place for both tourists and locals in Chicago. Covering over 300 acres, Chicago Grant Park is a pleasant and relaxing green area with many attractions. Highlights include soccer fields, volleyball courts, softball fields, tennis courts and ice skating at the Daley Bicentennial Plaza in the winter. In the summer, the beautiful gardens are in full bloom and very fragrant. The park is also home to the Buckingham Fountain, featuring 133 water jets, the Field Museum of Natural History and the Adler Planetarium. There are also regular shows and festivals in the park and gardens throughout the year.

Chicago's Jackson Park is one of the most spectacular public parks in Chicago and was opened in 1893 for the World's Colombian Exposition. The park was actually designed by Fredrick Olmsted, who also had a key role in designing New York's famous Central Park. Jackson Park is the perfect area for picnics, walking, jogging and is also home to many wonderful gardens. These include the traditional Japanese gardens, with large pools and a teahouse. These are also several beaches that border the park and provide a great place for sunbathing and swimming in Chicago. These include 57th Street beaches and 63rd Street beaches. Jackson Park is located behind the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, in the Kenwood area of Chicago.

This attractive and small Chicago park is a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the pleasant, green surroundings and gardens. With pathways, benches, and open spaces for sports games and sunbathing, the popular Museum of Contemporary Art is also situated in Chicago Seneca Park, and many interesting exhibitions of modern art are held in the art galleries.

Washington Park's Sunken Garden is situated in the Kenwood district of Chicago and comprises a large number of attractions. These attractions include footpaths, ponds, streams, fishing, sporting facilities, huge water slides, pools, fountains and the DuSable Museum of African American History is also situated in the gardens. Originally built as a sister park to Chicago's Jackson Park, Washington Park sponsors many popular events in the park, including dancing, arts and music. The park's impressive sculpture the 'Fountain of Time' is one of the most important landmarks in the park and gardens.

Situated on the south side of Chicago, the Abbot Park is next to the grounds of the Chicago State University. With many sporting facilities, including tennis courts, basketball courts, football fields, soccer fields and a playground area for children, Abbott Park also has some attractive landscape gardens. There is a field house located in Abbott Park which hosts many popular events, such as concerts, theatrical performances and dancing classes.

Chicago's vast Calumet Park is situated on the south side of Chicago and covers almost 200 acres. This is one of Chicago's largest parks and the many attractions include a beach area, softball fields, football fields, soccer fields, baseball pitches, tennis courts and a range of other sporting activities. There is also a nearby field house where indoor activities and sports are practiced.
